PRAGUE, Czech Republic, September 21, 2010 - avast! Free Antivirus was a top performer in the Dennis Technology Labs test sponsored by Symantec, outscoring a number of paid-for applications.
Avast! Free Antivirus outscored the paid-for internet security suites from Bit-Defender, McAfee, and Trend-Micro. In addition, avast! topped the below-average performance of free programs from AVG, Avira, and Microsoft Security Essentials.
“As our flagship product, we don’t hide avast! Free Antivirus because it is free or push it off our homepage,” said Vince Steckler, CEO of AVAST Software. “This test demonstrates that avast! Free Antivirus is no teaser product and it can successfully compete with other programs that consumers have to pay for.”
Early blocking techniques incorporated into avast! helped the program achieve this high ranking, with the Script Shield blocking malware before it had a chance to enter a computer. As Dennis Technologies pointed out in the report, products that blocked attacks early tended to protect a system more fully.
Denis Technology Labs took the unusual – and good – perspective of having test computers directly contact the infected web sites as would the typical internet user, instead of the more usual practice of bringing malware samples to the computer via a CD. During its comparative test of 12 antivirus applications, Dennis Technology Labs used computers running the Microsoft XP operating system with Internet Explorer.
